Ask an Expert: How Do I Become a Fashion Stylist? Part 2

Last time on Temple of Glam, fashion stylist Jenny Altman gave us the first part of her tips on becoming a stylist. Here's part two...Enjoy!

9. While at shoots, make friends with all of the other shoot assistants (assistants to photographers, hair and make up people) and models. Spending nights and weekends doing tests with them is the only way to get photos for your portfolio.

11. Always offer your styling services to your superiors for the small jobs that won't be interesting to them. Eventually they will say yes and let you step in. Then it's up to you to show your talent.

12. Be ready, willing and able on all fronts. Styling is the glamorous part of the job, but not most of it. A stylist is really a glorified schlepper. You run all over town carrying trunks and rolling racks, and it's physically exhausting. You have to really love it to stick with it.

13. If you realize early on that it's not as glam as you thought, move on. I always like to point out to my favorite interns that you don't have to work in fashion to love fashion. You can be the most fashionable doctor or architect of all time.

14. If you are lucky enough to make a living as a stylist, enjoy it. I have. Traveling the world, dressing celebrities, has taken me far beyond my wildest imaginations. As an assistant, I used to sit staring at the beach in Bahia, looking up at skyscrapers in Toyko and running through the markets of Marrakech reminding myself that although exhausted, my life was pretty extraordinary.

Ask an Expert: How Do I Become a Fashion Stylist? Part 1

Jenny Altman and I go waaay back. Back when I was fetching Starbucks, hosiery, and Double Bubble gum for my boss, the Editor-in-Chief of a major fashion magazine. I learned a lot in my position: how to write the perfect thank you note, how to de-carbofy a bagel, and how terrible of an assistant I really was! Of course I did some incredible stuff (like being Michael Kors' assistant for a magazine story & riding with Selma Blair as she and my boss went to the Costume Institute Gala at the Met). But the bevy of super-talented and beautiful women I worked with infinitely enriched my life.

Fast forward to now. I can't tell you the last time I spilled coffee on myself during a Starbucks run for someone else and now I'm organizing my own Fashion Week calendar. I'm also having tete-a-tetes with crazy-cool stylists like Jenny Altman who has worked with Fergie, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez, and Cameron Diaz.

So you say you want to be a stylist? Here's how:

1. Don't study fashion. It's blunt, but true. Many people in the business turn their nose up towards people who only study fashion. HR execs prefer more broad-minded students.

2. Learn basic sewing skills and be the best ironer and steamer possible.

3. Do whatever you can to get an internship at a fashion magazine. Be the best intern you can be. Leave all humility at the door. When an editor asks for coffee, just be glad she/he knows you even exist to ask you for the coffee.

4. Bond with the fashion assistants, they are your key to a job in the industry. When your internship is over, stay in touch without being annoying.

5. Offer to assist on any shoots or help out when needed. Even if you're working for free, it shows your dedication and enthusiasm.

5. It's important to be around and be seen. "Out of sight, out of mind" is very true in this business, so you need to stay fresh in everyone's mind for when they do need an assistant.

6. Try to become a full-time stylist's assistant (whether they are a freelance stylist or magazine stylist).

7. Keep quiet when you are on a shoot; remember it's their shoot not yours. Your input and opinion are not necessary.

8. Make sure you have good credit and a credit card you can use for lots of buys and returns.

Come back tomorrow for the rest of Jenny's tips on how to become a fashion stylist!

FREE Blowouts in NYC Tomorrow!

Avon Lotus Shield Free Blowouts Bus

Avon Advanced Techniques Tour Bus in Atlanta

Remember the super cute summer hairstyles from Tippi Shorter? Well Tippi and her crew have been on a tour with Avon and Cosmopolitan magazine to treat our humidified tresses. So far, they've hit up Atlanta, Miami, Philly, and Houston. And they're coming to New York on Thursday!

Tippi Shorter Avon Free Blowouts

Similar to how a raindrop rolls off a lotus leaf, the innovative technology in Advanced Techniques Frizz Control Lotus Shield is said to repel moisture. And moisture equals frizzy, wild (in a bad way) hair, right?

I honestly haven't tried the product, but I did find this handy-dandy video that puts hair through a "Steam Torture Test". It gets an A-plus on the name alone. Check it out and tell me, are you convinced?

Either way, why not stop by and see Tippi do her thizzle? Sorry, Snoop.

Thursday, August 5th 11AM-9PM:*

(AM) The Early Show Plaza (59th St. & 5th Ave)

(PM) Union Square (Exact Location TBD)

*Details are subject to change. Follow me for updates!

Ask the Summer Hair Expert: You On Point, Tipp?

Maybe Monday's tip to combat humidified hair (wear a turban) was unrealistic. Since it's truly hotter than July, I got real summer hair style ideas from Ojon stylist, Tippi Shorter, who has hooked up the locks of Gaga, Rihanna, and one of my all-time favorites, Ms. Diahann Carroll.

Why not drink a gallon of water, sit atop your AC, and try one of these styles?

The Untidy Side Braid

Inspired by Alexander Wang Spring/Summer 2010

Apply glossing cream to clean, damp hair to help prevent flyaways

Dry hair

Create a deep side part and direct hair to one side

Apply a conditioning paste/wax to mold hair

Start a French braid high on the head, keep it loose and casual by using three uneven pieces

Continue the side braid all the way to the bottom

Give the braid a slight shake to loosen it

Secure braid with clear elastic

Finish with shine spray

The Twisted Up-Do

Inspired by Jessica Alba's MTV Awards Red Carpet Look

Apply glossing cream to clean, dry hair

Separate hair into two sections, front to back

Gather back session into a high ponytail

Separate front section into three and secure middle section out of the way

Apply molding paste/wax to fingers and twirl one side section

Twirl to the ends of hair and wrap ends around ponytail, securing with pin

Repeat steps for other side

Lightly spray Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment Spray under final top section

Subtly backcomb section to create lift and height

Gently pull hair back and twirl the end of the section and wrap end around ponytail, securing with pin

Finish with glossing spray

Ask the Beauty Expert: Part Two (Face + Look Like a Pussycat Doll)

Q: OK. Give me the blow-by-blow on skin prep before applying makeup...

A: For prepping the skin, it should be clean and remaining makeup should be removed so there is a clean palette. I usually use a toner to clean the skin. I then clean up the brows by plucking or shaving any extra fuzz around the brows

with an eye brow razor. After that I apply a moisturizer that goes with my client's skin type. Eye cream, lip balm, and of course a primer. Primer fills in any cracks or holes there may be in the skin, giving it a smooth surface. The foundation literally glides on after primer, and it is also used to hold on makeup much longer.
Q: I want to use highlighter. What's the best way to apply it?
A: When highlighting the face, I actually normally use a lighter foundation (Bobbi Brown Stick Foundation) to do this.  The highlight points are between the eye brows and a touch above them. Under the brows, center of the nose a thin line, top of the cheekbones and center of the chin. Sometimes just a touch on the cupid's bow (above the lip).

Q: How do you apply blush for a natural look?
A: Blush is always best in the center (apple) of the cheek. The point of it is to add color and life to the face. When you naturally blush it's in the center of the cheeks. Remove the excess color from the blush and blend outward so there are no streaks or lines.

Q: I have oily skin. How do I get a healthy glow without looking greasy?
A: I use a translucent powder on everyone! Every skin tone. I use RCMA -- No color powder for every makeup application I do. It sets the makeup perfectly, takes away shine, but doesn't change the color, which is important  after you've spent time concealing and highlighting. So it's important to set the skin first, then you can apply the right products after to add the glow.

For darker skin I usually do it with a bronzer. Sun Bunny by Too Faced is a nice one- applied to forehead, nose, cheeks and chin this adds warmth as well as glow. They have a color called Snow bunny that is a highlighter, which can be applied after for highlighting. If your skin is oily, stick with highlight products in powder form. Also remember when it comes to powdering throughout the day, don't use a powder that has coverage like a MAC studio fix or something, because it has oil and its also like applying foundation on top of foundation which just brings out more oil. Urban Decay De-Slick Powder is a nice translucent pressed powder, Laura Mercier has a nice one as well.

Q: What are the current trends in lip colors?
A: I think people are getting really daring with bold, bright colors for fall 2010. Deep dark reds/almost-black tones paired with a champagne shimmer eye shadow, thin black liner, and a lot of lashes is a great look. Same eyes paired with hot pink lips is very fun for the New Year as well. I think Nude lips are always in especially if you're focusing on the eye.
Q: Hey Carlene! What products did you use on Nicole Scherzinger for the 2010 People's Choice Awards?
A: Check out my blog. I talk ALL about the products:

Ask the Beauty Expert: Eyes (Part One)

I was lucky enough to ask celebrity makeup artist, Carlene K, some of your questions. In fact, she gave me so much great info, I needed to split the interview into two posts!

Tomorrow part two will include: The new lipstick trend, how she made Nicole Scherzinger look so dern gorge, and what you aren't doing daily that is mucking up your beauty game. Until then feast your eyes on this:

Q: What's the best way to apply mascara?
A: With mascara, the best way to apply it is to apply it (top lashes) all the way around the lash. Most people apply it in an upward motion which is only coating half the lash. Wrapping the lash all the way around makes them look much thicker and longer.

Q: How do I get rid of mascara clumps...and what are the best non-clumping mascaras?
A: For removing clumps I recommend getting a lash comb that is made out of the lil needles, they are the best! If you don't have one of those, use a tissue to remove excess mascara from the wand and set it upon the lashes and twist, it'll comb them.
My favorite mascaras are: Loreal Voluminous, Too Faced Lash injection (it adds tubes to lashes to make them longer) and Urban Decay Skyscraper (has my favorite mascara wand).

Q: I have small eyes. What makeup techniques will make them look bigger?
A: To make eyes look bigger there are a few techniques, the most classic is adding a white eyeliner to the inner rim on the bottom of your eye, for darker skin something that looks more like a concealer. Adding a black to the inner rim, makes eyes really pop and look sexy but it closes them just a bit. With Lashes, you can wear fake lashes or really focus your mascara on the top center lashes to open the eye up.

Q: How do I keep my eyeliner from disappearing by end of day?
A: To keep Liner on all day, theres no way to do it without adding some sort of base or powder. My technique is a waterproof liner. MAC-Fluidline or Urban Decay 24/7 pencil but then taking that RCMA translucent and pressing that over to set it. If eyelids get oily anything will move. Keep the eyelids, and under the eyes powdered. I use a waterproof mascara on my clients- on the lower
lashes to avoid smearing and running.

And if you're wondering about what Carlene K's current beauty obsessions are...
I am skincare obsessed. Once we hit 25 our skin begins to lose elasticity so it's important to start good skincare early to prevent aging. I use Murad Pomegranate foam cleanser day and night. I use their pomegranate eye cream as well day and night, super important to keep the eyes moisturized to avoid getting fine lines.
I love Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream for everything. When I'm dry I apply it on my lips, or around my eyes. It's a miracle cream!!

I use Bobbi Brown Moisture Rich foundation, Urban Decay De slick powder, Urban Decay Baked Bronzer for my skin.
I live in shadows Toasted, YDK, Roach and Smog form Urban Decay .  Cant live without my MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack, I love Urban Decay 24/7 pencil in Rockstar!!

My daily lip color is either Angel by MAC or LoveChild by Urban Decay. love those baby pinks. If i went nude I would add Myth by MAC.
